Join PATC-MS for our first outdoor event of 2021 with a day of climbing at Annapolis Rock. Annapolis Rock is a quartzite crag in South Mountain State Park. It is known for its horizontal fractures which make for a variety of easy, moderate, and difficult face and roof routes.

This event will be limited to PATC-MS members and capped at 14 climbers.

There is a two mile hike in to Annapolis Rock. Plan to bring water and snacks for the day.

Climbers should bring their own personal gear (harness, helmet, shoes, chalk bag, and belay device) and a top-rope set-up if they have one. The club will provide additional top-rope set-ups as needed.

Besides top roping, there will be a clinic for trad climbers on setting pro and building a belay station in the kind horizontal cracks that you find at the Gunks. The cracks are right off the ground, making it a great place to practice and learn. Bring some of your favorite pieces.

The club will meet at 8 a.m. the Appalachian Trailhead Parking on Route 40, just outside of Myersville, Maryland.

Join PATC-MS for a day of climbing at Great Falls. Great Falls is one of DC's local crags and good for top-roping. We'll meet up in the climber's parking lot (sharp right immediately after gatehouse) and walk to one of the areas to spend the morning climbing by the river.

Who: Open to anyone with basic gear! Bring your climbing shoes, harness, and belay device.  Also, bring 2 liters of water per person and food that you want. You must also pack out your trash at this park!

If you have any/all of these items, please also bring them:

    • Top-rope set-up (i.e. static line, gear, webbing, dynamic lines, locking carabiners)
    • Guidebook (i.e. PATC-MS's guidebook you receive for going to the monthly meeting)
    • Sunscreen/bugspray
    • Helmet
    • Belay gloves
    • Food to share
    • Extra gear if you have it.

When:  Meet at the parking lot by 8:00 AM! For people unfamiliar with the area, there are multiple climbing areas spread out over a few miles and cell reception can be poor at the crag. If you don't arrive on time, you may have a hard time finding the group.

Where: Great Falls National Park on the Virginia side (9200 Old Dominion Dr, McLean, VA 22102). There is an entrance fee per car ($10), and they also accept the National Parks Annual Pass ($80). Meet in the climber's lot, which is a sharp right turn immediately after the gatehouse.

    New Leader Day 2021

Been leading in the gym and/or sport climbs? Follow trad routes? Want to lead your first traditional route? New Leader Day is for you.

Experienced traditional climbing leaders will share the knowledge and techniques they use to lead single and multi-pitch rock routes. This event is for experienced followers who want to make the jump to traditional leading.

This seminar is intended for those with sufficient trad experience to begin leading multi-pitch routes, but who have not yet gained significant experience in leading such routes.

Topics covered include: Placing nuts and cams, building the most common and useful kinds of anchors, belaying the second, preparing for and sequencing a traditional lead, and getting down (multi-person and multi-pitch rappels).

The day will include participants mock leading a route as they apply what has been covered during the day. This day will in no way replace professional instruction or the usual years of apprenticeship many climbers take on in order to develop the judgment and skills necessary to lead climb as safely as is possible. This event is meant for those just learning to lead trad climbs.

The event will take place at Sugarloaf, MD.

    Skills required:

The willingness to take responsibility for yourself and the safety of others.

The ability to lead belay and comfortably follow rock routes.

Knowledge of basic climbing knots like: retraced figure eight, figure eight on a bight, overhand knot, overhand on a bight, clove hitch, double fisherman’s knot, friction hitches like the prussic and/or the autoblock, EDK or flat overhand, Bowline.

Competence in setting up top rope anchors

Please email the trip leader, Rick Dotson (rickdotson@gmail.com) with a brief resume of your climbing experience, including recent routes followed or led, normal outdoor top rope following level, and any training you've received.

    Equipment required:

    •    Personal climbing gear (shoes, helmet, harness)

    •    Two locking biners and belay device (Grigri or autoblocking device preferred)

    •    One, 20 ft. cordelette, one short length of cord for an aubobloc

    •    One, 1 inch wide, 48" length nylon, runner

    •    Headlamp

    •    Appropriate food, water, and clothing for a full day outdoors

If you have a trad rack and rope you should bring them. If you have additional locking biners you should bring them. There will be mentors' gear you can work with.

Carpool to Event: We will meet in the upper parking lot at Sugarloaf and hike to the Cub Scout Cracks area. Please arrive on time. Crowds form quickly and we want to claim our spot as early as possible.

Miscellaneous Cancellation Policy: If you can no longer make the event, please change your registration as soon as possible. This allows people on the wait list to join. If you fail to show for an event and do not cancel within 48 hours, you will be considered a no show. On June 19 we will join our friends with the mid-Atlantic Climbers for a crag clean-up day at Sugarloaf Mountain. We have several areas of concern that we will work depending on the size of the overall group.

Please be sure to wear good sturdy boots and long pants.  Bring a helmet, gloves, a small pack, and food/water for the day.

As the work may take place in a busy area, we will need to be aware of others wanting to use the trail while we carry out repairs.

After trail work is complete (by 1 p.m.) we'll organize top-roping for the afternoon.

    OPEN TO ALL CLUB MEMBERS

Three days of fun and climbing in the Yosemite of the East!  Come to PATC-MS's climbing gathering at the Gunks for Independence Day weekend!

    WHAT:

Independence weekend camping and climbing at the Gunks, one of the best places anywhere for beautiful, moderate traditional climbing. Plenty of options for all ability levels (there is also some bouldering and top-roping, but this is primarily a trad area).

The club will help coordinate transportation and help out with any info people need on the area, climbing, or otherwise.

    Camping:

The club has reserved campsites for 12 people. Please share tents if possible.

You will receive a link to the carpool/camping signups once you've registered. Please fill it out.

The AAC campground has a covered pavilion suitable for stove cooking, fire ring, drinking water, and coin operated shower. Scattered around the campgrounds are bathrooms, running water, and a few faucets for water. Campsites have picnic tables suitable for stove cooking, but no open fires are allowed, except at the fire ring near the pavilion. If you need supplies there is a climbing shop (https://www.rockandsnow.com/store/) and a ShopRite in town.

    WHERE:

The Shawangunks (aka the Gunks), New Paltz, NY.  It's about a 6 hour drive from the DC area.

Please note that the Gunks is a FEE AREA managed by the Mohonk Preserve. The fee is $20/day or purchase an annual membership for $105, which works out to 6 days of climbing to pay for it.

    WHEN:

The Independence Day weekend from Saturday, July 3 to Monday, July 5.

    Additional info:

    • Please find your own climbing partner for the weekend.  The listserv is a great place to post that you are looking for a partner if you don't have one lined up.
    • There are many restaurants and hotels in the city of New Paltz, approximately 20 minutes from the AAC Campgrounds by car.
    • The cliffs, especially at the top, feature full bars of LTE reception for most people, but the campsite and town do not. Load your map directions ahead of time.

    Type of climbing:

Loads of trad climbing, including a nearly inexhaustible amount of great easy to moderate climbs. Most of the routes are one to three pitch with well maintained bolts or anchors nearby as obvious descent points. Rock is very solid, characterized by horizontal cracks, easy roofs even on moderate climbs.

The main cliffs are the Trapps. The traditional grey Dick Williams guidebook is sold at the climbing store nearby, although the Gunks App (iPhone and Android) is also gaining popularity, and includes a GPS feature for finding routes.

    2021 Cascades Trip

PATC-MS is considering sponsoring a trip to the Cascades in early August. However, we need to know that there is sufficient interest to justify the trip and cost.

If you love alpine climbing, this is the trip for you. Participants would need to have solid alpine experience, which could include completing Alpine Skills Weekend, or similar training.

This trip could be similar to the 2018 trip to Baker and Shuksan.

The club will pick up the campsite costs, as usual.  Airfare, share of food, and ground transportation, while we will try to coordinate, will be your responsibility.

If you have the skills, the equipment, the fitness level, and the desire, this promises to be a once in a lifetime endeavor.

At a minimum you must be be equipped and capable of backpacking for multiple days, camping multiple days on snow, climbing on snow and ice, and traveling on a glacier.

If you are interested, please sign up and email Rick Dotson (rickdotson@gmail.com) with your climbing experience.
