    Participants are also expected to know how to rappel.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and stay-at-home orders, the New Climbers Day is unfortunately postponed until guidance that we can safely hold the event. We hope to see you later this summer.

For Indoor Sport Climbers Ready to Get Outside

Event Description:

Are you an indoor sport climber itching to get on the sharp end outside? This clinic is for indoor sport climbers who have limited or no experience leading sport routes outside and want to learn how to safely transition to outside sport leading.  

The major items covered will be outdoor sport climbing equipment, the differences between routes indoors and outdoors, clipping positions, fall zones, belaying and catching outdoors, different types of top anchors and cleaning the route from the anchors to the bolts.

We'll also have a discussion on proper outdoor crag etiquette and Leave No Trace principles.

The venue for this event is Safe Harbor, PA.  It's about 1.5-2 hr drive to this sunny sport crag.  It's a great cool-to-cold weather location.

Please note the carpool location is the I-95 commuter lot.  Meet time is 07:30 to carpool up to Safe Harbor PA.  We should wrap up around 4-5pm.

Skills required:

Ability to lead belay and sport climb indoors.  Ability to rappel.  Class participants should have completed 20 indoor leads and be proficient climbing 5.8.

Equipment required:

Harness, climbing shoes, chalk bag, belay device and locking carabiner, and 2 additional locking carabiners.  A helmet is also recommended (personal choice).  Quickdraws and a personal anchoring system (PAS) should be brought if you have them.  We will provide some gear for your use.

Get on I-495 N in Tysons from Maple Ave E and Chain Bridge Rd

Continue on I-495 N. Take I-95 N to MD-543 N in 1, Abingdon. Take exit 80 from I-95 N
1 h 12 min (73.1 mi)
Take MD-136 N, PA-74 N, PA-372 E and Hilldale Rd to Green Hill Rd in Conestoga Township

This will be strictly enforced by event leaders. Any person who shows up to an event that is not a member will not be able to participate in the event.

Cancellation Policy:

If you can no longer make the event, please change your registration as soon as possible. This allows people on the wait list to join. If you fail to show for an event and do not cancel within 48 hours, you will be considered a no show. Club members who have 3 or more no shows will not be able to register for future events for a period of one year whether its due to failure to cancel or the person does not show up for the event at all.

If the event is rained out we will reschedule for Saturday, April 27.
