New Ice Leaders

This is a new event for 12 club members only, mentored this winter by Robert Graver, David Lysy, and Joffrey Peters, for experienced ice climbers who wish to learn how to lead.  There can be 12 participants. and participants are responsible for providing their own gear!

This is a chance to learn how to lead ice with very experienced leaders, in New Hampshire, where the ice will be in!

For climbers who are club members and interested in continuing/deepening their addiction to ice climbing! This event will provide climbers the chance to develop their skills over three days  under the supervision of experienced ice climbers. 

Participants will be required to organize their own gear. The club has gear available to borrow, so if you need gear, contact to coordinate before you leave!

Club Member in good standing with waiver on file.

Must be experienced ice climber

Participants are responsible for all travel, lodging, and personal equipment. 

Equipment list:

- helmet


-belay device with 2 lockers

- eye protection

- 2 technical ice tools

- crampons with compatible boots

-  at least 2 medium length (at least 14mm) ice screws

* appropriate clothing

- daily snacks & drinks

How to apply: Login to the PATC-MS website, find the New Ice Leader under events, fill out the registration form and done. It’s that easy!

How to get there:

 It’s about an 10 hour drive from DC area. Seek directions to Bartlett, NH  There are flights to Manchester as well.  Participants can share rental cars to Bartlett. 

Carpooling is recommended. Will create spreadsheet to coordinate carpools in near future. 

Clothing and Gear:

Key to staying warm is layers. Please NO COTTON.

Pack clothing as if you were going mountaineering on Mt. Washington, minus the cooking and camping gear. Gloves are guaranteed to get wet, please bring multiple gloves.

Bring all necessary gear required to ice climb. To include: helmet, harness, belay device with two lockers, (2) ice tools, crampon compatible boots and crampons. 

Needing gear? Check with the PATC-MS gear closet for options.  Rental gear is available at IMCS

Group Equipment Needed:  6 top rope rigs


Bring plenty of water and snacks to include lunch for the days we will be ice climbing. A thermos full of coffee or hot chocolate will be very beneficial.
