Learning
Although we are not a school or guide service, in keeping with the Mountaineering Section's mission "to train interested people in mountaineering techniques" the PATC-MS offers numerous opportunities throughout the year for climbers to share knowledge and learn from each other. In this way we follow in the tradition of mentorship by passing along the skills and techniques of mountaineering. These learning programs seek to provide opportunities for newer climbers to benefit from the experience and mentorship of more seasoned climbing veterans in the club.

New Climber Day PDF Print E-mail

Each spring the Mountaineering Section kicks off the climbing season at Carderock by offering an opportunity for new climbers or gym climbers to come give outdoor climbing a try.

All ages and experience levels are welcome and no prior knowledge or equipment is required.  The club will provide harnesses and shoes to those who need them.  Club member volunteers will be on hand to provide belays and basic instructions.

During the last weekend in January on Mt. Washington, NH, experienced mountaineers will share techniques they have used and learned, such as self-arrest, building a snow anchor, and climbing in crampons. After a day of practicing alpine climbing techniques, members brave the “worst weather in the world” and attempt the summit. New members are expected to know basic skills for their own safety

New Follower's Day PDF Print E-mail

This is a cost-free event for leaders. This day is not intended to replace professional guide services, but rather to give members a chance to climb together
